Project Highlight: A Small Las Vegas Backyard Landscape Design: Modern, Water-Smart, and Ready for Play

Here’s a landscape design and install we did not too long ago.

We love projects like this—tight backyard, big wish list, and a family that wanted a clean, modern space for hanging out.

If you’re researching landscaping in Las Vegas and wondering what’s realistic in a compact yard, here’s a great example of how thoughtful design and the right materials can make every square foot count.

We started by setting the “bones” of the space with a poured concrete patio finished in a rock-salt texture. That finish creates a subtle, organic pattern with just enough traction for everyday use without feeling rough under bare feet.

It’s a simple move that adds character and keeps the patio from reading as one big slab.

To frame the lawn area, we installed a graphite paver border around the turf.

Paver edging

The dark tone reads crisp against the green and gives the whole lawn a tailored, modern edge.

We carried that same look into a set of matching graphite 2′ x 2′ step stones that lead toward the side gate, which helps with traffic flow and keeps the gravel from tracking onto the patio.

The plant palette is intentionally soft and simple.

Along the walls and in the corner beds we used desert-adapted shrubs and a young shade tree—plants that are either native or well-adapted to the Las Vegas climate, so they’ll thrive with less water and maintenance.

Large white modern decorative pots add height and create focal points at the back of the yard. They also give the homeowners flexibility to swap in seasonal color or sculptural accents without reworking the irrigation.

And yes—lots of lush, green turf.

Artificial turf

Artificial turf in Las Vegas is often the difference between a yard that only looks good and a yard that actually gets used.

Here we chose a permeable product that drains well, holds its shape, and stays soft for kids at play. When we use turf in family spaces like this, we pay close attention to details:

  • A laser-straight border
  • Compacted base for smoothness
  • Proper drainage
  • Clean transitions to hardscape and rock.

Those small details let the yard look “finished” from day one.

Because water efficiency matters so much in Southern Nevada, we design every project to align with best practices from the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA).

A quick fun fact: since 1999, more than 241 million square feet of grass have been removed through SNWA’s Water Smart Landscapes program, saving an estimated 203 billion gallons of water for our community.

Homeowners are often surprised to learn that SNWA will allow permeable artificial turf as a mulch within a Water Smart Landscapes conversion—as long as you still meet the program’s requirements, including low-flow drip irrigation and at least 50% living plant coverage at maturity.

So turf can be part of a water-smart design when it’s used thoughtfully with real plants and efficient irrigation.

Day-to-day watering is where the savings really add up.

Drip-irrigated landscapes use far less water than grass, and SNWA’s seasonal schedules help everyone stay efficient.

If you’re new to the area, it’s worth bookmarking their watering guidance so you can set your controller for the right days and run times throughout the year.

On the policy side, you may have heard about Nevada’s nonfunctional turf law (AB356).

In short, beginning in 2027, water from the Colorado River can’t be used to irrigate “nonfunctional” ornamental grass at commercial, HOA, and government sites—lawns that nobody actually uses.

The law does not affect single-family backyards like this one, but it’s part of a larger regional push to focus our water use where it matters.

Materials we used here—at a glance

  • Concrete patio, rock-salt finish for subtle texture and better footing.
  • Graphite paver border to frame the turf with a crisp modern line.
  • Graphite 2′ x 2′ step stones that tie the look together and guide movement.
  • Permeable artificial turf over a well-compacted base for comfort and drainage.
  • Desert-adapted plants on drip irrigation for low water use and long-term durability.
  • Decorative white pots for vertical interest without overcomplicating the plantings.

If you’re planning your own makeover, SNWA’s site is a gold mine for tips on efficient irrigation, seasonal watering schedules, and rebate programs for converting water-thirsty lawns.

We link our clients to those resources often because smart choices at the design stage pay you back in lower water bills and less maintenance over time.
